Sand. I never expected my life would revolve around sand. A dynamic resource that is essential for almost all forms of everyday life. Whether you live by a sandy beach or not, sand is everywhere. From gadgets, cosmetics, smart phones to our very own beach experience, as sand is a resource, mined for Silicon Dioxide.
My day literally starts with sand beneath my feet being on a beach. Then, head into work to talk about sand, write a tangent later on or even sweep up the million millennial-old-grains that seem to follow me. Grains of sand are everywhere and there is a reason for it. Though, when lone are insignificantly overlooked, which is a shame as in billions it’s significantly important.
Rachel Carson, a mother of the environmental movement and a hero of mine once said, “In every outthrust headland, in every curving beach, in every grain of sand there is the story of the earth.” Interestingly, I quote “Every grain of sand is important for the sustainability of our coast”. Goes to show the significance of every grain of sand for two passionate scientists to quote such despite varying generational influences.
Without further ado, I recommend that you watch the following TED TALK to enlighten your awareness about the serious issue of beach sand resources.
