Today marks history. It is the third opportunity for a Gold Coast beach to take out Keep Australia Beautiful’s Clean Beaches competition – crowned with the nation’s cleanest beach title. Foremost, if successful today it will be the third year in a row.

First is was Tallebudgera.

Then Currumbin.

Now (possibly) Rainbow Bay.

If you are a local, you’d agree and say, “of course, Gold Coast’s beaches are the best and cleanest”. But that is quite a biased opinion when there are over 11,000 beaches in Australia and 60,000km of coastline to cover (including islands). Nevertheless, the glitter strip seems to gain recognition year after year. And for many good reasons.

In fact, manages to outweigh other deserving finalists throughout the heart-felt judging criteria. Actually, 8 categories to be precise. Tallebudgera won due to the immense youth action – back when I was a youngy  – and Currumbin scored as everyone loves Currumbin and care for each and every grain of sand and patch of dune.

But when you really come to think of it. It really goes down to the natural forces that shape the beach and later the opportunities communities act on to enhance everyone’s beach experience.

So, in my opinion and third time round. Yes, Rainbow Bay could win. Keep your fingers crossed for a couple of more hours and tune in for the result!

May the best and cleanest beach win Australia’s cleanest beach for 2014.
